16 MBTI Types and Hogwarts Houses
Explore the possible connections between MBTI personality types and Hogwarts houses. Fun and for entertainment only.
Each MBTI personality type is believed to have a natural affinity with one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Let's explore which house each type might belong to.
Gryffindor: Gryffindor values courage, bravery, and honor. Gryffindor students are often seen as fearless and heroic, but they can also be impulsive and hot-tempered at times. Some people in other houses, especially Slytherin, may think that Gryffindor students are always engaging in 'meaningless heroism'. However, it is precisely this courage and determination that led many Gryffindors to join the Order of the Phoenix and fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. Gryffindors are quick to act and have a strong sense of justice. They are likely to be ES types (Extroverted Sensing) who are good at adapting to situations and getting involved. ESTP and ESFP are more likely to be sorted into Gryffindor. However, ENTP, ENFP, ISTP, and ISFP may also be sorted into Gryffindor due to their extroverted intuition function. Te-dominant types, such as ExTJ, can also fit in Gryffindor as their action function is dominant over their perception function.
Ravenclaw: Ravenclaw values wisdom, intelligence, and creativity. Ravenclaw students are often highly intelligent and motivated in their studies. They take pride in their originality and like to practice magic that other houses may not. Ravenclaw students are more focused on satisfying their thirst for knowledge and less concerned about others' opinions. Some of them may be ridiculed for their quirks at first, but they are unique and hardworking. The combination of Ne (Extroverted Intuition) and Ti (Introverted Thinking) is often associated with Ravenclaw. The love of learning and intellectual pursuits aligns well with this combination, making INTP and ENTP the most 'Ravenclaw' types. Fi (Introverted Feeling) function should also be considered. Introverted judging types are eager to be unique, just like Ravenclaw often has some 'strange' students. In addition, Ravenclaw also values logic. Although ISTP may not be as quick-witted as others, their Ti-dominant thinking mode is very logical, but their divergent thinking is not very flexible (Ne). Other academic personality types, such as INFJ and INTJ, are also known for their high intelligence. I also tend to place ENFJ in Ravenclaw as they have an academic inclination, but ENTJ may not be particularly suitable for the slow-paced and academic Ravenclaw.
Hufflepuff: Hufflepuff students are known for their hard work, friendliness, loyalty, and honesty. They are not as competitive as other houses and are more humble about their achievements. Hufflepuff is the most inclusive house, valuing students' efforts, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair competition rather than specific abilities. In addition, Hufflepuff students have a strong sense of morality and right and wrong. The keywords of Hufflepuff are 'loyalty' and 'friendliness'. Loyalty is often associated with introverted sensing (Si), as people want to fit in and not stand out. Therefore, ISTJ, ISFJ, and ESFJ types are definitely suitable here as they tend to follow traditions and play it safe. In addition, due to Si (once bitten, twice shy), INFP and INTP are also suitable for Hufflepuff. Another characteristic of Hufflepuff is 'impartiality', which implies the role of Ti. INTP's Ti is dominant.
If Hufflepuff were a real house, it would likely be the largest house as it includes three of the most common personality types.
Slytherin: Slytherin students are ambitious, cunning, and strong leaders. They value honor and know how to make decisions based on the situation. However, this can also lead to hesitation before taking action to weigh the best decision. According to Dumbledore, Salazar Slytherin valued qualities such as intelligence, resourcefulness, determination, and 'a certain disregard for rules'. Dumbledore believed that Harry Potter had these qualities and was almost sorted into Slytherin. Slytherin students also have a strong sense of responsibility and leadership ability. They are focused on their goals but can also be self-confident. Ambition, leadership, and achievement are the keywords of Slytherin, which requires Ni and Te functions to be dominant. In other words, due to their strong ambition, xNTJ types are particularly suitable for Slytherin as they know exactly what they want and will find a way to get it. ESTJ is also suitable for Slytherin as they have strong leadership and are domineering presidents. In addition, ambitious XNFJ types are also suitable, but their ambition is not for domination and power but for cooperation and community. They will focus on their goals and become powerful political idols through their dedication. The hesitation of Slytherin points to INxJ and Ni dominance. Therefore, from this definition, INTJ is the most 'Slytherin' of all types.
